PC 3550-10 in Duocolor version for new Cruise Terminal in Copenhagen

The design of the facades of the buildings of the new cruise terminal in Nordhavn is inspired from the shape of sails. Along the pier three almost identical terminal buildings are build, each one with a size of 3,300 m². In total 4,850 m² PC 3550-10 in duocolor version with outward Heatbloc surface and inward opal colour, along with the required perimeter fame profiles, build the polycarbonate facades. The exposed position at the sea side made a special treatment of the framing system necessary. Another 275 m² are installed in the inside of the buildings as interior walls. The pearlescent surface of the facades shall remind of the iridescent look of pearl oysters.

With a U-value of about 88% and a G-value of about 26% the polycarbonate facades allow a good performance on energy savings. The panels have a maximum length of 14.50 m. To install the polycarbonate facades for each terminal a team of 8 persons needed 4 weeks.

At the new cruise terminal three cruise liners each with approx. length of 304m can simultaneously anchor. Half of each terminal is used for baggage handling, while the other half contains the waiting room and passenger facilities such as reception, cafes, shops and toilets.

The grand opening in May 2014 was a big success and we take the chance to thank our partner that made possible that we are part of this large-scale and impressive project.

Polycarbonate panels in 16 mm or 20 mm thickness – for small continuous vertical glazings for non-air-conditioned buildings

The requirements on refurbishments and new constructions always depend on the intended use of a building. Especially for non-air-conditioned buildings like smaller professional storage places, riding halls, agricultural facilities as hutches or even for small private shelters, the requirements are much lower than for occupied buildings.

The most important for such cases is to find an economical, long-lasting and reasonable solution. In some countries the use of trapezoidal or corrugated sheets, PVC sheets and figured glass for example is very common. Our panel system in 16 and 20mm thickness and Up-value of approx. 2.1 W/m²K and manageable width of 33cm in crystal or opal finish provides a smooth look to vertical glazing area of such constructions while the maximum daylight is reached inside which reduces the operating costs. The average span width of the system is around 1.00m next to our maximum panel length recommendation of 4.0m. With minimal alloy components these panels are both fast and easy to install. All this makes them additionally an ideal solution for DIY purposes of end users.

Laban Centre in 2014 – A closer look to the Sterling award winner 2003

The Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize is a British prize for excellence in Architecture and awarded annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The RIBA Stirling Prize is awarded to “the architects of the building which has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year.”

2014 the Laban Dance Centre is as stunning and impressive as in 2003. The prejudices against plastic materials especially in the building sector are still going strong. This may be due to the fact that the public has not yet an increased awareness that plastic materials are not alike, they have very different properties. People therefore may tend to lump together all kind of plastic materials instead of judging them for a certain application.

Polycarbonate is compared to PVC a relatively young material with very good properties for a building material. It is shatter-proof, light-weight, recyclable and through the technique of UV-coating much more resistant against weathering than all other plastic materials which commonly are used in the building sector. The easiness of installation, transparency and light-weight makes it the perfect material for individual constructions with great cost/efficiency ratio in comparison with other kinds of building materials.

The Laban Centre is one example which shows that the general concerns of using plastics materials in the construction sector are exaggerated. To demonstrate the durability of Polycarbonate and the individual design options that our products provide, we mixed together pictures from Laban Centre at construction finish with pictures taken in July this year.
